THE PARTING

Written by: C. Neil Davenport

EXT. WOODS – NIGHT

The flashers on a car are blinking as smoke rises from the hood. NICHOLAS’s head lies on the steering wheel. He violently wakes up. His hands shake. He looks over to the passenger seat. He picks up a woman’s heel.

NICHOLAS

Rachel?

He starts looking around the inside of the car.

NICHOLAS (CONT)

Rachel!

He stumbles out of his car.

NICHOLAS (CONT)

Rachel, where are you?!

He walks further into the woods.

NICHOLAS (CONT)

Rachel! Where are you?

He runs amongst the trees.

NICHOLAS (CONT)

RACHEL!… (Whispers) Where is she?

Nicholas notices his shadow in front of him outlined in green. He puts his hand up to see the light on his palm. An abnormal noise slowly booms. He turns around slowly and for a second, forgets how to breathe. The green light grows brighter on his face.

NICHOLAS (CONT)

Oh God.

He rushes to the front door of a house and begins pounding it.

The abnormal sound grows louder.

NICHOLAS

SOMEBODY HELP ME! HELP ME, PLEASE!

Nicholas quickly turns around. The green light casts itself upon the house. Nicholas quickly runs amongst the trees trying to get away from the light and quickly sees a garage door. He searches for a way to lift it. The green light curves around the corner of the house. Nicholas finds a knob, lifts the door and crawls underneath.

INT. GARAGE – CONT

The green light grows brighter as Nicholas pushes the garage door down behind himself. The abnormal noise fades out. Nicholas finds another door, opens it and rushes in the house.

INT. KITCHEN – CONT

Nicholas rushes into a kitchen. All the lights are off. A teakettle on the stove is whistling.

NICHOLAS

Is anybody here?

He walks around the kitchen, sees a phone and checks if there is a dial tone. He hears nothing and puts it back down. Nicholas goes through each drawer to find a flashlight. He finds one.  There is a scraping at the window. Nicholas slowly goes over to it and leans in close to see through it. The green light pierces through the window. The abnormal sound booms. He stumbles over covering his face with his hands. Panicked, Nicholas tries to look around for an exit as his eyesight recovers. He runs out of the kitchen.

INT. LIVING ROOM – CONT

Nicholas sees a brick hearth connected to the fireplace and curls up beside it on the floor. The green light travels along the outside of the house piercing through the windows. Nicholas sees a number of body scattered around the living room. The light fades out and Nicholas rushes to the front door. He opens it and the green light is waiting for him on the other side. The abnormal sound booms, leaves the door open and Nicholas runs nearest to him up a flight of stairs. The living room is briefly shown to have people standing up, facing the door with a green light pouring out of their mouths.

INT. HALL -CONT

Nicholas turns on the flashlight and looks for a safe place to hide. The green light travels up the stairs. Nicholas scampers into a nearest room next.

INT. ROOM – CONT

Nicholas quickly shines the light around the room frantically looking for a hiding place and sees a closet.

INT. CLOSET – CONT

He jumps in, closes the door and buries himself underneath the hanging clothes. Breathing hard he turns off the flashlight and sees from underneath the door frame the green light fading in and out on the floor. He covers his mouth to keep his breathing softer. The green light seems to have moved on. A moment of silence passes. A hand touching a metal knob is heard. Nicholas turns on the flashlight and points it at what his hand is touching. It is a knob of a small door connected to the wall. He quietly gets up opens the door. Looks inside the passage on where the small door leads and the abnormal sound booms. The closet door flings open and the walls are drowned with green light.

NICHOLAS

WHAT ARE YOU?! NO! STOP! GET AWAY!

Nicholas struggles, but the figure drags him out of the closet. The door closes quickly. The abnormal sound gets louder as Nicholas screams. Some more abnormal sounds are heard. Then suddenly silence. The flashlight is laying on the closet floor with the flashlight still shining. Tracking out of the storage space through the room and down the hallway leading to the stairs the house is fully lit.

INT. LIVING ROOM – CONT

The living room is fully lit and there are not any bodies anywhere to be found.

INT. KITCHEN – CONT

Dimly lit, Nicholas is seen facing the stove. The tea kettle is still whistling. He drags it across the face of the stove to another spot. The whistling stops. He moves like a machine when he looks to his right at the dead phone on the countertop. He picks it up, pushes a button and hears a ringing.

NICHOLAS

Rachel?

I’m fine. Are you okay?

Good. Where are you?

No, no. Stay put.

Nicholas begins to turn around and in his mouth is a green light.

NICHOLAS (CONT)

I’ll come get you.

Like a machine, Nicholas pushes a button on the phone and sets it down on the countertop. He turns and walks into a dark room filled with a bunch of people with green lights projecting out from their mouths. A green light shines on them from behind a glass door. Nicholas walks amongst the people then blends in the crowd as they turn around and filter out the door. The abnormal noise fades up.
